John - 08/10/2017:

There are a myriad of tripod reviews suggesting one may buy any number of cheap, lightweight tripods before finally buying a tripod that’s fit for purpose, which would actually have been cheaper in the first place. Gitzo tripods are most certainly not cheap, but in most instances they represent a lifetime purchase, and thus excellent value. The Systematic Series represents the epitomy of this principle, not least being top of the Gitzo range. With the increasing pixel density of both DSLR’s and mirrorless ILC’s, tripod stability has become the key parameter in the tripod triangle of weight, stability and cost, of which, of course, one may have any two. In seeking a compact tripod which actually works I purchased a predecessor to the GT4553S, the GT5562LTS from T4 Cameras. Not much taller than a Series 1/2 Traveler when collapsed down, the GT5562LTS can support 44kgs and is best described as a small pyramid in terms of stability. This is also true of its successor the GT4553S. The only drawback is their weight, but unfortunately the ‘triangle’ alluded to above makes this unavoidable. Nevertheless it is true that the Gitzo Systematic will be the last tripod you need to buy. Needless to say, I too thought to know better, buying a number of cheaper, lighter alternatives before settling on my Systematic, which indeed I could have bought for less in the first place!
